My kids can have grilled cheese sandwiches the whole day long, but it can get boring quickly if I don't try to "spice them up". That's what made me to want to try out this Hawaiian grilled cheese with ham and pineapple. I'm tempted to say that the pineapple is optional (lol), but it's just too good to leave out of the recipe.

What you need for the recipe...

  • Half a baguette cut lengthwise (OR any bread roll or slices)
  • 2/3 to 1 cup of your favorite cheese (grated - in this recipe we use mozzarella and mild cheddar mix)
  • 4 ounces (113g) of ham, chopped into strips
  • One medium sized red onion, cut into rings
  • Half a cup of pineapple chunks

How to make grilled cheese with ham (and pineapple)

Make sure to gather all your ingredients upfront, for faster cooking. The baguette can be substituted with regular bread rolls or Hawaiian bread. I just love the crunchy texture of the baguette.

Ingredients for the grilled cheese with ham and pineapple

Fry the ham using its own fat. When done, set the ham aside and reserve the fat to use later on in the recipe to fry the onions and the pineapples.

Use the same pan and fat to pan-fry the onions and pineapple until they are caramelized.

On the bread (baguette), sprinkle half of your cheese and spread it out on both slices.

Spread the ham and onion over the bread.

Add in the pineapples and the remaining cheese and place in a baking tray and put under your broiler until the cheese has fully melted. You may also use a toaster oven on high for 5 minutes.

If you like, you can serve it this way as an open faced sandwich, but its double the goodness when you slap them together to create a grilled cheese sandwich overload.

What goes with grilled cheese and ham?

You can have this delectable Hawaiian grilled cheese as a stand alone sandwich, or make it a complete meal by having the relevant sides like vegetables, Greek salad, tomato soup (a classic grilled cheese side dish), or even fries.

What cheese goes well with ham?

Cheddar cheese is the best for a grilled cheese sandwich. Because of its sharp taste, there's just never a need to worry about seasonings.

Is cheese and ham sandwich healthy?

It all depends on your health goals, but you can make some substitutions - e.g ham is highly processed, so you could switch to turkey, or even shredded chicken tenders. Mozzarella cheese is not as rich as the cheddar - so you could go for it (or switch to a reduced fat option).

What's the difference between baguette and French bread?

You may be wondering if you can use French bread instead of the baguette. The answer is yes, but you will need to understand the difference between the two so that you can make adjustments when making your grilled cheese sandwich. Find out more about the differences here.
